We’ve been making theatre together for 15 years and produced four national tours.
Independently, Elena is playwright, performer, director, and moonlights as a social media/marketing coordinator. Tori is a sound and video designer, composer, half of Strange Victory Performance, and Director of Production at Outside the March. We both work all over the country and went to school at the University of Alberta + National Theatre School of Canada.
As Tiny Bear Jaws, make innovative, provocative, and entertaining new works that explore the creative possibilities exclusively available in live performance, an introduce design early into our play’s development as a way of uncovering a show’s story, tone, and aesthetic. Our work pushes boundaries in content and form and encourages productive discomfort.
Since its beginning in 2015, Tiny Bear Jaws has had over 125 shows in 5 cities. In that time, we’ve hired and worked with over 175 artists. We strive to provide hands-on mentorship for historically marginalized artists and engage meaningfully with the communities with whom we share our work.
We’ve partnered with companies all over Turtle Island, including but not limited to Downstage, Swallow-A-Bicycle, Verb Theatre, and One Yellow Rabbit (Calgary), Buddies in Bad Times, Factory, and Tarragon Theatre (Toronto), Fringe, Azimuth, Workshop West, and Citadel Theatre, as well as the Common Ground Arts Society (Edmonton), the Centaur (Montréal), and UpintheAir Theatre (Vancouver), to name a few.
We were the recipients of the 2023 Elizabeth Sterling Haynes Award (Edmonton) for Best Independent Production (Smoke, written by Elena Belyea, directed by Jenna Rodgers), and nominated for four 2024 Elizabeth Sterling Haynes Awards (Edmonton) for This Won’t Hurt, I Promise (winning Outstanding Fringe New Work - Award to Playwright).
Tiny Bear Jaws is an agile, queer-run, award-winning theatre company by creative partners by Elena Belyea (Artistic Director) and Tori Morrison (Artistic Producer).
